Getting Started
How do I set up Room Analysis?
When you first open Shush, you'll be guided through a quick room analysis. Shush listens to your space, identifies the frequencies already present — HVAC, fans, traffic, appliances — and shapes its noise output around them. Your room is already providing part of the sound spectrum. Shush only adds what's missing, so it works at lower volume. We recommend re-running Room Analysis whenever you change rooms.
How do I configure tinnitus relief?
During setup, you can sweep through frequencies to match your tinnitus tone. When you hear the pitch that matches your ringing, tap to set it. You can configure different frequencies for left and right ears independently. Shush applies a precise notch filter at those frequencies, removing them from the noise output. This is based on clinical notched sound therapy research.
Which noise color should I use?
Different noise colors serve different purposes:
Brown noise: Deep, rumbling. Best for sleep and deep relaxation.
Pink noise: Balanced, natural. Ideal for focus and sustained attention.
Green noise: Mid-range focused. Optimized for concentration and work.
White noise: Full spectrum. Broadest coverage across all frequencies.
All four are synthesized in real time — no loops, no recordings. Every moment is mathematically unique.
How does the sleep timer work?
Research shows broadband noise helps you fall asleep faster, but continuous noise all night can reduce REM sleep by up to 19 minutes (Penn Medicine, 2026). Shush's smart timer is designed around this: it helps you drift off, gently fades the noise, then stops — so your brain can rest properly. Set it from 15 minutes to 12 hours. It works even when your device is locked.
Using Shush
Can Shush play in the background?
Yes. Shush continues playing when your screen is locked or when using other apps. Playback controls are available on your lock screen and Control Center.
Does Shush work with headphones and speakers?
Yes. Shush automatically detects whether you're using iPhone speakers, wired headphones, AirPods, or Bluetooth speakers and optimizes the output for each. The same noise can't sound right on every device — so Shush adapts.
Why does it sound different in different rooms?
Because every room has a different acoustic profile. The hum of an AC unit, the buzz of a fridge, the rumble of traffic — these all occupy different frequencies. Shush reads your room and adjusts its output so the noise works with what's already there, rather than blasting over it. If you move to a different room, re-run Room Analysis for best results.
Tinnitus Relief
How long until I notice tinnitus relief?
Many users notice immediate comfort. For longer-term reduction in perceived tinnitus intensity, research suggests consistent daily use over weeks to months. Longer listening sessions tend to show greater benefit. Individual results vary. Shush implements evidence-based notched sound therapy but is not a medical treatment.
Can I adjust tinnitus notches after initial setup?
Yes. You can reconfigure tinnitus frequencies anytime through the app settings. You can add or remove notches, adjust frequency and filter width, and set them independently for left and right ears.
Technical Issues
The audio cuts out or stutters
Ensure your device has sufficient storage space and close unnecessary background apps. If the issue persists, try:
Force-quit the app and relaunch
Restart your device
Verify iOS is up to date
The sound quality seems poor
Try these steps:
Run Room Analysis again in your current environment
Ensure your volume is at a moderate level — Shush is designed to work at lower volumes than most noise apps
Check that your headphones or speakers are functioning correctly
My settings were lost
Settings are stored locally on your device. They may be lost if:
You deleted and reinstalled the app
You restored your device from a backup that predates your settings
iOS storage optimization removed app data
You can reconfigure your preferences through the setup flow or in Settings.
